New materials.

Today i donned the usual viking outfit (yes, there is one) and went down to the local yearly mediveal market to have a few beers with a mate, play some games and have a look around.
As usual i was on the lookout for flytying materials, there's always an abundance of feathers and furs to be found in those markets and way below fishing store prices.

I payed in total 200 swedish crowns or about 20 euro for all of this.
One big piece of dark red/purple fox that turns black at the tips.
One fairly large piece of blue/black racoon.
One very dark purple whole rabbit skin.
One lepard dyed whole rabbit skin.
A whole peacock sword.

The sword is neatly cut into bits to fit my tying box.
As you know it's a versitile material used for tags, nymph bodies, dryfly torsos and also goes in classic flies like the Sunrays Shadow among other things.

Rabbit is another material i really like.
It makes a great wing for streamers and has a way to almost vibrate in the current.
To strong of a current and it will collapse though.
It still makes a good swung fly and is excellent fished in still water.
The hair also makes an excellent dubbing for nymphs.

I like those moment when you buy those odd materials in an odd place and the salesman wonder what it's for and you reply with "fly tying".
That usually sparks some conversations.

Feathers and furs.

Rabbit zonker sculpin for seatrout or large browns.
Hairwinged salmon fly quickly named "Nightmare".
Peacock tag, silver body with thick silver rib,
black rooster, fox and racoon wing and guinnea fowl hackle.
I like adding a bit of  a silver body to my salmon flies, i have a theory that states that a swung fly should in some circumstances have a bit of material that gives a bit of reflection to catch the attention of the fish.
Not that i fish for salmon and seatrout a lot but they are fun flies to tie.

FLY TV - This is Skagit

So here we go.
The followup to "What the hell is Skagit".
I had been looking forward to this since they announced it last week but unfortunatly it was a little bit of  a letdown.
First of it was a bit short.
But more importantly it felt more like a long commercial...
Of course they want to sell their gear and the vid is released without us poor fishermen having to pay for it but still.
I like Visions skagit gear, i fish it myself but i really would have liked to hear more about the techniques, line placement, anchoring, mending, what flies are typical skagit flies and why to use them on our sea trout.

It's still a nice clip but unfortunatly not as good as the previous FLY-Tv videos.
Sorry guys.
More fishing, less selling.

Flashy fly experiment

The latest fly tying experiment concists of playing around with flash.
Nothing new in that sence, i've tied my pike flies in this manner for a couple of years.
These are on tubes and a bit smaller, targeting rainbow trout and sea trout.

I'm not entirely happy with them.
I have an idea about how they should look but it's not really all the way there.

So this post is basicly to say; I'm alive, this is a work in progress and that not all the flies that we as fishermen tie turn out the way we want to.

First clip from fishing in Stockholm

So here's a small clip that Patrick shot with his head-cam.
I was standing beside him,we were talking to another guy and he was just lazily placing his fly out in the stream and was rather surprised that he got a bite.
On the other hand it was propably not a big one and he wasn't very scuffed about loosing it.

Mattias shot a bit more and i'm eagerly waiting for his edit!

There and back again

If Bilbo would have brought a 2 hand rod on his trips instead of a stick.
I wonder wha fishing is like in middle earth.

Anyways...

I'm back from my trip down the country.
Visited family and fished a couple of days.
I've already told you about Gävle so here's Stockholm!

I got picked up by car,the luxury of it was not lost to me, and we arrived at the Stockholm stream at about a quarter to six in the morning.
Just half an hour later the first fish was hooked by Patrick and i jumbled to get the net ready while Mattias got the camera.
Unfortunatly the fish snagged on a rock and got loose.
That one was probably big,the second one he hooked was a bit smaller.

To me it was a moodraiser though, now we knew the fish was there!
We kept on fishing but to little success.
We changed the spot and i really found it wierd and interesting fishing amongst the houses and trying to anchor the line while standing by a wall 5 metres above the water.

My favourite spot of the day was just downstream of the house of government, it was possible to wade and make proper casts.

All and all there were two fish hooked by Patrick but none landed over the day, i got a possible take but it would have just bit the wing of the fly and not the hook.

It was great fun,i delivered the swap flies and i got to do a bit of fishing, talk about fishing with people equally interested and try my luck on the seatrout of our capital.

Mattias in the inner city
A good day and i hope i get to fish with these lads again!

Fishing the Capital

I'm in the midst of planning a mini fishing trip.
Gonna pop down to Stockholm over christmas since i'm fairly close anyways.
The aim is set on seatrout and i'll be fishing with the lads from Troutpassion, something to wich i'm greatly looking forward to.

Right now it's talks about the best flies, where to stand, depth to fish and all that anticipation that comes with planning a trip.
Of course,as always, you find yourself thinking that the very first cast will grant you that big one.
Not likely but you know the feeling!

If i'm at all successfull it will be my first seatrout ever.
There is also a slim slim chance at salmon but the trout is the main target.

I'm planning to make a stop in Gävle and fish there as well on my way down the country to try for some seatrout there as well.
So a 14' pole, heavy sinking tips, skagit lina and big colourfull flies!
I'm really excited!

I'll probably keep posting in the comming days as i'll tie some more flies for the trip.

The EU passes new salmon law.

Link/article in Swedish.

The EU have passed a law requiering its meber countries to phase out all farmed salmon in the next 10 years in favor of the wild.

This in turn will require bypass systems so that the wild salmon can get into the rivers to spawn, this is not the case in almost all Swedish salmon rivers atm.
This will affect sea trout breeding as well.
It will also require the young salmon passing in to the ocean to get by the water damns and the turbines unharmed.

Closer controlls and a relativly short plan period really promises a brighter future for the salmon.
If the new directive is followed that is.

On the other hand, not remodelling the water dams is now illegal.

Now for the inland dams....
Trout and grayling need to be able to breed as well.
